Group Counseling
Compare 2-3 types of group formats used the treatment of addictions and substance use disorders. Which format do you feel is most effective? Justify your rationale.
Counselors use variety of group formats and models in the treatment of addictions and substance abuse. One of these groups is the psycho educational group. This group educates clients about addiction and substance abuse and also the consequences. This group is designed to have a direct impact in the client’s life such as giving options for growth and development, and encouraging people to take initiatives to stop abusing drugs (Velasquez & Maurer 2011). Another group is the skills development group which aims at developing clients’ skills that will help them to achieve and maintain abstinence. This group takes a theoretical approach to suggest that people who abuse drugs lack important life skills that help in coping with the world (Velasquez & Maurer 2011). It, therefore, seeks to restore these skills that will enable people not to resort to drug abuse.
Why is it important for counselors to know what happens in 12-step groups? Use examples within your answer.
It is important for counselors to keep track of what happens in 12-step groups. This is because, for a counselor to help his clients in the recovery process, he needs to know what exactly is troubling the client (Velasquez & Maurer 2011). This gives the counselor a vivid picture as to why his client is abusing drugs. A person, for example, may be suffering from compulsive drinking and his addiction may have adverse effects in his life. For a counselor to treat this client, he should understand first why his client is drinking. It may be that the client is drinking because of a failed marriage or life frustrations. The counselor needs to help the client to resolve these life issues that makes him drink. Through this approach, the counselor will help the client stop the bad drinking habits.
What is the importance of confidentiality in a group? What techniques would you use to encourage confidentiality among group members?
Confidentiality is the central ethical issue in counseling. For an effective group counseling session, there should be confidentiality (Velasquez & Maurer 2011). Confidentiality is important because it builds mutual respect between the clients and their counselor. With confidentiality comes trust and this makes it easy for clients to confide and share their story to others. Having clients sign contracts agreeing to confidentiality would be an effective technique to encourage group members to treat information gained during group therapy as confidential.
