Since the 19th century, Chinese leaders have sought to attain the goal of “wealth and power,” restoring China to its former glory before the coming of the West. In the course of this analytical essay, compare and contrast their 19th and 20th century efforts at changing China to achieve this aim. Explain why were unsuccessful until recently, that is, since the 1980s. Be certain to use historical examples of reform and revolution to illustrate your points.
