Many individual traits can characterize someone as being a leader or showing leadership, but it is the realization of someone to endeavor the culmination of several leadership traits that puts them on the path of being a successful leader. At a relatively young age I have been instilled with an understanding of the above statement and through the early stages of my Marine Corps career I have been mentored and groomed to lead; throughout my career I have been fortunate to practice my leadership traits in management, problem-solving, decision-making, and mentoring.
One rewarding example of my leadership qualities has been my experience as a marksmanship instructor aboard Edson Range. I essentially trained Marine recruits marksmanship, but thinking back at this experience I have found that I have displayed incredible leadership qualities. The job I had was one of the most draining, physically and mentally demanding jobs I have ever had. I worked outside from 4:45 a.m.- 6:00 p.m. Monday through Friday with a new batch of recruits every week. In training my recruits I practiced Justice in rewarding and punishing recruits impartially and justly; Judgment in seeking out the best plan for each shooter; Decisiveness in using the information I had to quickly respond to safety issues or correcting errors; Initiative in improving my skills at becoming a better instructor and not waiting for someone to have to tell me how to; Endurance and Enthusiasm by not showing my fatigue while motivating others to increase the likelihood of a successful day; Knowledge of my job so that my orders or commands were not made out of intuition or guessing; Bearing in exemplifying a professional environment while instilling confidence in my orders; Tact in how I respectively addressed issues to different people ( officers, recruits, senior enlisted, etc.); and Unselfishness in my “mission-first” mentality that I characterized through the daily sacrifices I made for my country, the Marine Corps, and the lives of every single one of the thousands of recruits lives I have impacted.
I began saying that this was one rewarding example because subconsciously I practiced all of these leadership traits that had made me into one of the best instructors while also positively impacting the lives of many young men. This is one single example of how I have exemplified my leadership skills. I have also in a combat deployment in Afghanistan in which I provided security as well as logistical support and with the U.S. State Department as a Marine Security Guard on a special duty assignment in eastern Africa. Leadership is the hallmark of the Marine Corps and these experiences, through leadership, qualify me as a candidate into this program.
This program will enhance all of my leadership qualities to a more professional level. As Marines we are constantly learning and seeking self-improvement to find more success. I am no longer in the Marine Corps but still feel it essential for me to expand my knowledge beyond what I already know. I am confident that I could do well or help others now but I would rather be a better husband for my family, be able to sharpen my creativity in leading others, and share my gained knowledge whenever I can. Learning the “cutting-edge” of this field is something that very much interests me so that I can apply what I know to the classroom and learn from others experiences to make me a better leader.
As a professional project, I would like to look into the development and implementation of leadership programs that are personally tailored to specific communities and organizations. Instilling continual education in a healthy competitive manor adds many positive aspects to a person, which translates into an environment where loyalty, dependability, and knowledge can lead to a much higher likelihood of success in whatever environment it is implemented. Everyone has the desire to better themselves but what often happens is that a lack of courage or initiative hinders people from bettering themselves and pursuing their dreams.
Participating in a gradual program brings obvious challenges but the balancing of academic responsibilities with work and personal life only adds to the growth of the challenge and overall benefit of learning. Leadership isn’t one that is made through a program but only enhanced because of ones life. Without having work, life, and personal responsibilities this program would be shortchanging a students experience to. Challenges help polish and enhance a person’s resolve and I look forward to the demands this course will bring!
In conclusion, I would like to address my social concerns as it relates to the character of people. Put simply, I believe in people. I have been blessed to have impacted the lives of people around the world, from small subsistence farming villages in Rwanda to Marine recruits; from Afghan children to friends and people in need. I want to be involved or in charge of organization/s who values the potential of people because contemporary society has lost sight at what people can truly accomplish when given the right opportunity or when afforded the right tools to effectively improve themselves and the organization, community, and family’s they are a part of. I am not suggesting a hand out rather, guidance through leadership that will be much more sustainable in the personal, organizational, and international applications of those who seek reaching their optimal potential.
