Case Procedures
1. Treat the case as a business case with a finance emphasis. The marketing, management, etc. aspects are important. About half the grade is on the qualitative analysis. Always approach the case from the perspective of a financial management perspective, despite some cases seeming to emphasize a financial institution’s perspective. You are a consultant to the firm’s management, advising how to optimize the owners’ wealth.
2. Write cases in Standard English prose (paragraphs and sentences). The bullet format is not acceptable.
3. Exclude repetition of material from the casebook. Instead of repeating that Nicholson File makes small tools, be analytical. Say that the small tools are never going to be a “hot market” item; thus, sales potential is limited. Or say that the small tools match up well to the small tools that Cooper makes.
5. In the last paragraph, unequivocally state and defend your recommendations. Conceptually, a recommendation cannot be a scenario.
6. A good write-up will be about three pages. If you hand in less and don’t cover the main points you will not earn a “good” grade. You should also turn in your spreadsheets used to base your recommendation. Since the work is in building the excel spreadsheets assumptions made sure be clearly stated in the first tab. After the general layout is created clear navigation of the tabs in the spreadsheet indicate different scenario analysis, i.e. scenario one, scenario two etc.
