The mid-term paper is a research paper which allows you to concentrate on a particular subject of your own interest. The topic is one that raises a business ethics issue, and is not from your own personal experience. The format is as follows: set forth the facts of the case, identify the legal issues, identify the ethical issues, discuss the ethical issues from the ethical perspectives which we will be going over – and are in the readings – and form a conclusion. I want you to be able to articulate the reasons for your conclusion, and am not particularly concerned with the conclusion that you draw. I also want you to be able to identify the legal issues that may be present. The topic will be approved by me in advance, and I will probably require that it be submitted in the third week of class. More on that later. The paper constitutes 35% of your grade. An example of a paper could be something like what happened with BP a few years ago.
