Closing Argument

Paper #2 is comprised of two parts–a \”for\” and an \”against.\” In imagining a trial for Minnie from \”Trifles,\” present closing arguments by the County Attorney and Mrs. Peters. Write at least a one-page essay for each based on the evidence they know. Obviously, Mrs. Peters knows more about what she found in the kitchen and women\’s lives on isolated farms. The County Attorney would know more about governmental law and murder cases, what was found in the barn and bedroom. As an audience for these closing arguments, the County Attorney will address a mid-western jury of white male farmers in 1916, and Mrs. Peters will address a contemporary American jury of men and women, working and middle class, liberal and conservative with some ethnic diversity. As you develop your assertions and proof, remember the most important rule in writing about literature: NEVER JUST RETELL THE STORY.For each argument, make sure to have a solid thesis in order for the writing to support the case. Note: I do not believe that there is an ideal prosecution or defense; however, how well you support your case in its logic, emotional reasoning, language and evidence is what I am reading for. Start with a preliminary thesis such as, \”A man was strangled in his own bed and Minnie Wright is guilty/not guilty because _________________ .\” (The blank after \”because\” may have multiple details because this is a complicated case.)
