As we move from the 19th to the 20th century, there are so many new ways that art is used as a means of communication. Your discussion this week deals with art and war; for your response essay I want you to consider other ways that visual culture comments on the changes in European and American society in the first 50 years of the 20th century. You can think about materials and techniques that were new at the time, the impact of public exhibitions of contemporary art, the relationship between literature/poetry/music and art, etc? Your response should include examples of art from the different stylistic periods referenced in the reading for the week; be sure to fully identify (title, artist, date, stylistic period) all of the works referenced; use specific terminology; and elaborate on how the objects relate to the topic.
Each Essay should have a formal, thematic organization. You should concentrate on the information presented in that week’s PowerPoint and Chapter Readings. For maximum points your essay should be two full pages (typed, double spaced, 10 pt. font): No Longer and No Shorter! Practice formality and academic level writing (no jokes, anecdotes, personal references – this is not an email/conversation)
