Assignment 1
The purpose of this education is to prepare for a professional career. Therefore, ALL assignments are expected to have a professional presentation.
There is not a length limit (max or min) to this assignment. Answer the question asked. “List” means just that – definitions are not required. “Define and discuss”, in contrast, asks you do just that; define AND discuss a topic (e.g. identify the significance, compare and contrast, relate to other topics, etc.). Your goal should be to exhibit your mastery of a topic.

1. Contemporary health and safety professional will face a dynamic environment. Discuss.

2. Historically, legislation, precedent, and public opinion all favored management. Provide examples of changes in legislation, precedent, and public opinion, which encouraged the expansion of the health and safety movement in the US. In other words, use specific examples (at least three) from the history of the health and safety movement to identify changes in legislation, precedent, and public opinion.
3. Briefly discuss the Industrial Revolution, and how it affected the health and safety movement.

4. What are “the 3 E’s of Safety”? Identify and define.
5. There are three levels of controls that we use to prevent injury due to Health or Safety hazards. Describe each, and rank them from most preferred to least preferred.

6. Health & Safety Teams can include members with various titles. List at least three, that you think are the most common, and explain why you chose those titles.
7. List the various factors of competitiveness. Why is it important that Health & Safety Professionals understand this concept?

8. There are several theories of accident causation that have been proposed throughout the years. In general, why should a Health & Safety Professional be familiar with them?
9. Accidents are a serious detriment in today’s workplace. Discuss some of the effects.
10. FMEA and HAZOP are two methods of Hazard Analysis. Develop or obtain and existing form, and complete at least one sample line. (E.g. see Fig. 27-5 and Fig. 27-6).
11. OSHAS 18000 is a common health and safety management system. Discuss its purpose, including the documentation associated.
