Context refers to the social, cultural, historical, and political conditions in which something
existed or occurred. In regard to art history, context is important because it sheds light on
the historical situations that affected the creation of a visual object. With our twenty-first century
vision, we think differently the world than our historical predecessors. A work of art
may be wrongly interpreted if we do not properly understand the context that influenced its
creation.
