Aubrey is a 23 year old female currently living with her mother in the families suburban middle-class home. Aubrey was a bright student, participating in program at school for gifted children. Aubrey is also an athlete and was at one time the captain of the cheerleading team. In addition to her successes in school, Aubrey is a talented pianist and singer, singing at weddings in her community.

At this point in time you have been contacted by Aubrey’s Mother as you were Aubrey’s chemical dependency counselor in her last treatment experience. As you know from her history, Aubrey has been in treatment, of various lengths, 12 other times over the last 7 years. She is a heroin user and to your knowledge has yet to actively participate in a recovery program that has yielded over 9 months of continuous abstinence. She has overdosed on 2 separate occasions coming close to death on one of these. Her knowledge of treatment is obviously extensive; however she has lost a great deal of hope for her own success in recovery.

As you recall, Aubrey’s mother is very invested in her daughter’s success, however the last 7 years have taken a considerable toll on her wellbeing. As a result Aubrey’s mother is very resentful of the time and energy she is again expending on her daughters recover and verbalizes to you, “what will it take for her to hit bottom?” It is apparent that she has limited hope and has entered into a state of living exclusively “one day at a time” rather than dreaming of potential success for Aubrey or a life of freedom for herself.

Aubrey’s mother works full time out of the house. And as you recall she has a small parent support group which she participates in called Bridges of Hope.

The impetus for this call is that Aubrey is again using heroin, she has stolen property from the family home and has now been living out on the streets for the last 30 days or so.
