Describe Sin and how it relates to Salvation /moral evil

This research paper is for an upper division theology class and we are to discuss what our reflection on sin is and how it relates to salvation.

-question is can we have a reflection on sin out of our contexts of gender, race, ethnicity/cultural identity, national belonging, class, sexual orientation, religious backround etc.?

This is a research paper, but the main books we are to find information to put into our paper is from

” Idol and Grace” by Orlando Espin , which will be required to be read for this paper .

Also to be able to look up related stuff to sin from another book called “;An introductory Dictionary of theology and religous studies.” by Orlando Espin and James B.Nickeloff. (Hit control F type in sin)

( Here are some pg. numbers I was able to find sin on, but not all, pg.694,901,1056,1159) the link is below

https://books.google.com/books?id=k85JKr1OXcQC&pg=PR3&source=gbs_selected_pages&cad=2#v=onepage&q&f=false

(BOTH OF THESE BOOKS ARE FROM MY TEACHER/HE IS THE AUTHOR/EDITOR)

Anything that has to do with sin from those books is a great way to make this research paper come together.

– build this paper around the ancient hebrew meaning “chet” and “harmatia” which means “missing the mark” aka the world is missing what it should be not being what one should be. Christians after the new era started to call it “sin” originally it was referred to as missing the mark. (sin) was a made up word if we want to talk about sin we must talk about “;missing the mark” One is responsible for selfs actions, the evil one does is the evil one does, evil does not do itself

WHAT MY TEACHER SAID to put in PAPER during my visit to OFFICE HOURS VERY IMPORTANT!!!!

-stick with the biblical uderstanding of “;missing the mark”

-ask what does this have to do with being a human being and human community?

-its inhuman to think some are alone, humans arent meant to be alone

-IF SIN IS MISSING THE MARK, THEN WHAT IS THE MARK

-can talk about the origin and how it meant when archers shooting arrows were trying to hit the bullseye, when they missed the bullseyse-this was missing the mark!

These are from my notes and should be involved in building the paper and can be used in qoutes and cited.

-What does SIN have to DO with SALVATION?

-What is the mark we miss? What are we saying about ourselves when we say we were/are missing the mark?

-What is the modern understanding of sin/salvation

-it has little to do with saving our souls or going to heaven

-Sin assumes that others know what sin is or means

-moral evil: all assuming a "should be(or an alternat.)

-moral evil has no logical justification, not religous

-what makes us not be human is moral evil

-moral evil is hand in hand w/ suicide /hope

-catastrophic events arent due to God

-not all bad things that happen are a result of moral evil

-:at the origins"-a story that context deals w/ one that is equal-whos bringing us temptation, humans are images of God , but arent God. We were created as humans "human refusal to be human"

-THE experience of sin – starting assumptions

-not every bad event is a "moral" eventl;nor is every evil "moral" evil

-the distinction between moral evil and natural disasters and pain: a-the autonomy of nature. b- the autonomy of conscience

-moral evil comes to disrupt/damage/impair/destroy that which would otherwise be goodness: hence , moral evil has to do with the "starting assumptions"

-in a human world "moral evil" ultimately has np "logical" justification : beause it is ultimately the dehumanization of the human.

****IMPORTANT FROM NOTES SO GO WITH THESE IDEAS**

-MORAL EVIL : "Sin"

i.the experience of moral evil:

1.victimization("to be the victim")

2.victimizing("to cause others to be the victim")

3.moral disgust at evil

4.only believers can "sin"

-"sin" is a term for moral evil in a numer of religous traditions, alrthough all religous traditions understand moral evil

-moral evil is also understood and reflected upon by most persons who do not participate in a religous tradition

-consequently, moral evil /sin appears to be an extensively widespread expeirence , although explained and expressed varioulsy across the world and across the generations

ii-. Sin as "missing the mark" a biblical understanding of "sin"

iii. Sin is understood as expressing itself variously in human contexts:

-personal sin – social/structural sin- a sin"at the origins"- fundamental options

-moral evil is not fundamentally "religous" although its "sin" terminology is.

I NEED THIS PAPER FORMAT TO BE DOUBLE SPACED 1 inch margins

MLA format for writing the paper, BUT WITH TURABIAN footnotes/endnotes for qoutes that are added from sources, and in the works cited it must be in TURABIAN format.

-notes can be used a a reference that i provided
