Design an OE system

It’s 2005 and This is My OE System
Create the basics of your OE system based SOLELY on what you’ve read so far. Don’t try to put what you know in there. Synthesize the ideas from Thedacare and Virginia Mason to come up with what YOU think the best of the two – at that point in time – would be. If you choose to use additional sources, make sure they are dated before 2005. 3-4 pages.

Notes to uses while writing paper:
Remember that he differentiated between “best practices” and “best ideas” when you’re writing the paper.
The things we came up with included:

1. Sensai – see THEDACARE article for their use of this coach/mentor

2. Go-and-see – remember that TC went to Ariens Outdoor in Wisconsin for this, while VMMC traveled to Hitachi in Japan

3. Facilitators – TC talked about having facilitators to make their organization a “learning organization” with a continuous education and training program….these facilitators would be cycled through training and sent back into the organization, spreading the new knowledge throughout the company and applying as they learned

4. Physician Compact – this was huge for VMMC….aligning the goals of the physicians with those of the health care delivery organization (and vice versa) would be a great influence on quality and productivity

5. Underlying Philosophy – the core of the system needs to be the underlying philosophy, not the tools….the organization should be getting people on board by walking the talk, using jidoka & heijunka & kaizen, removing waste and improving their processes (SEE VMMC)

6. Rapid Improvement Events – TC discussed these events…using these to teach about problem solving, value stream mapping, etc, for continuous improvement purposes

7. No-Layoff Policy – both VMMC and TC had these in place…I think Going Lean in Health Care talked about this the most, but you’ll find it in the VMMC and TC articles as well

8. Transparent Leadership – openness and honesty from leadership will build consensus and commitment from all levels of the organization (SEE VMMC)

9. Improvement Goals – you have to set goals and have something to work toward…note that TC was setting and measuring financial goals, VMMC’s goals were geared more toward process and safety improvement

10. Bundles – we kind of added this last minute…something about standard work and patient safety and health
