Designing an Affordable Potable Water Solution to Meet FSMA Requirements.

FSMA Requirements

This project will identify and research FSMA-related water challenges and possible solutions for low-income communities and farms on Kaua`i (Hawaii)to transition surface water, rain catchment, and groundwater systems into FSMA-compliant, legal potable water systems.

How will the Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) affect current farmers on Kaua`i financially and logistically when it comes to water usage? What is the island-wide impact?

What factors need to be taken into consideration of potable water system selection? ie. affordability, energy usage, availability of materials, ongoing maintenance requirements, etc.

What are some detailed possible potable water solutions?

What are the most common contaminants and vectors in Kaua`i’s water that need to be removed? What about water-soluble pesticides and other chemicals? What do FSMA requirements test for?

What are the water testing sites available to meet FSMA compliance in Hawai`i and what are the associated costs? Do they tes for all common contaminants found in Kaua`i water?
What financial resources are available to assist low-income communities and farmers in obtaining needed systems?
