Determine the meaning of Metaphor: Using literature as a means of analysis, reasoning, critical thinking, and interpretation of character

simply put:
(1) as you read the assignment, select passages that have particular meaning to you. In the course of writing two page, 500 to 600 journal, for example, you should select four or five passages — either a sentence, sentences, paragraph or paragraphs. Consider the crossword moments, the moments of decision in these characters’ lives, nothing that verbs often carry the weight drama in literature.
(2) Cite or copy each passage . Format: Place a quotation in one paragraph and respond , in your own words, in a subsequent, separate paragraph. That is:
(3) Write a short, essay (one or two paragraphs) in response to each passage in terms of context, style, meaning, or validity.
Your goal is to produce a text in response to texts, to produce writing of clarity — informal, but with clearly articulated point of view and an argument that makes use of a logical line of reasoning.

(3) Then conclude. What is the passage? The hermeneutic? How does Winesburg, Ohio relate to the unknown reader nearly one hundred years after the book publication? That is, how does the story remain as true and life-like today as it did when it was written? Look for the broad statement- the moments of clarity–that brings everything together for you as a reader, then quote, cite and analyze.

The Essay: Format, Content
(1) Introduce the book by including the title and author at some point. This usually comes somewhere in the beginning.
(2) Put the author in context, establish his/her perspective. This means explaining to the reader and yourself where this person’s point of view. Is there information from the text that will help you do this? People write from certain points of view. Can you identify this person? Use text references as needed. Whenever you quote from the text to support what you are saying use quotes and state the page afterward.
