Assessment task:

Planning is central to the theory and practice of management. It is one of the four key management functions, and is defined by Schermerhorn (2014 p. 200) as:

“…the process of setting objectives and determining how to accomplish them”

By definition then, planning is concerned with both “ends” (what we are aiming for) and “means” (how to get there).

Discuss and compare the role of goal-setting within two different types of planning. Such types of planning may include strategic planning, operational planning, scenario planning etc.

How can organisations adapt their approach to planning to deal with high levels of uncertainty regarding the future? Is planning even possible or worthwhile under such conditions?

Students should aim for a minimum of ten (10) peer reviewed journal articles, in addition to other research.
