Assessment Two

Assessment Two: The Task

A 2,000 word report worth 50% of the overall module grade, assessing module learning outcomes 1, 2, 3 and 4.

Write a report on an emerging or established social enterprise paying particular attention to the learning outcomes as outlined below. Within your report you should make comparisons with at least one other social enterprise. You should also make recommendations and offer reflections based on your research, your learning in lectures and seminars for this module, your pitching experience and subsequent reflection, knowledge, skills and practice (if applicable).

Module Learning Outcomes: Students will be able to:
1. Articulate a clear understanding of the concepts and themes associated with entrepreneurialism and intrapreneurialism
2. Identify and demonstrate how entrepreneurial skills are acquired by
individuals, teams, and organisations
3. Explain how different tools and techniques can be applied to enable
entrepreneurial/intrapreneurial practices
4. Discuss and evaluate potential opportunities for entrepreneurs in the 21st Century

The purpose of this assignment is to produce a report that demonstrates an understanding of the main areas covered in this module. In addition to this, the report will permit an exploration of the core competencies in the preparation and writing of reports.

Assessment Guidance: The report should be structured as follows:-

• Executive Summary (200 words)
A short executive summary that highlights what the report is about and the key elements and main issues that are raised by it.

• Background (500 words)
Briefly describe your chosen social enterprise outlining aspects of its origins, size, location, activities, purpose, value, business model, organisational and legal structures, and funding sources. Give brief background information to at least one other social enterprise against which you will compare your chosen organisation.

• Discussion and Evaluation (800 words)
Discuss, evaluate and compare the chosen social enterprises from the following perspectives:-

1) Social Enterprise Model
Examine your chosen social enterprise and explain in detail why it is suited to the social enterprise model, and how this is reflected in its purpose, values and activities. Compare your chosen organisation with another social enterprise to highlight their common purpose and values.

2) Organisational and Legal Structures
Analyse the organisational and legal structures of your chosen social enterprise and examine how suitable and effective these structures are in achieving the organisation’s social and commercial objectives. Explain how the organisational and legal structures could be improved, based on comparisons with another social enterprise.

3) Financial Arrangements
Analyse the capital and revenue models of your chosen social enterprise, to
identify:-
o its principal sources of funding and resources
o how its financial performance could be improved, based on comparisons with another social enterprise

4) The support needs and sources of support for social enterprise
Analyse the chosen social enterprise to identify its specialist support needs. Explain how this specialist support can be linked for maximising efficiency through using local, regional and national social networks.

• Recommendations (200 words)
Please make recommendations on what entrepreneurial skills and resources are required by individuals and teams who are working for the chosen organisation. Your recommendations should be based on your understanding and research into the chosen social enterprise and the concepts and themes associated with entrepreneurialism and intrapreneurialism.

• Reflection (200 words)
o Reflect on whether the variety of tools and techniques that help establish a typical enterprise could be applied to enable entrepreneurial practice in a social context.
o What have you learnt from theories and concepts of social entrepreneurship that could be applied to enhance your entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial practice?
o Reflect on whether you could be a social entrepreneur or not based on your core values, skills and understanding of social entrepreneurship.

• Conclusion (100 words)
A section that summarises your main arguments and recommendations.

Note: The report should also contain a table of contents, a reference list and any appendices that you have used. You should use at least six reference sources. These may be books, journal articles, websites, news articles etc.

Referencing
Use the APA referencing format in your reference list and to acknowledge the material you use from your sources in your discussion. Make sure that you avoid plagiarism by
1. summarising or paraphrasing any material from your source (i.e. put it into your own words)
2. use quotation marks where you want to use a phrase exactly as your source wrote it. Use this option selectively. Keep quotations to less than 10% of the total word count.

Module Assessment
When working on assignments you will need to demonstrate a critical awareness and knowledge of theoretical perspectives. You should attempt to capture not only views that justify your standpoint on an issue, but perspectives that may not coincide with your own.

Late assignments are subject to a penalty of 10 marks for anything up to 24 hours after a deadline and 10 marks per day thereafter (including weekends). Don’t lose marks unnecessarily; get your work in on time!
