During this class, we will be discussing social and cultural dynamics through the lens of psychosocial development (Erikson’s theory).
The psychosocial crisis suggests an inevitable tension between the competence the person has at the beginning of a stage, and the demands and expectations for growth during the stage. In addition, the theory assumes that this tension is growth-promoting and that people are motivated to reduce this tension.
What experiences have you had or observed in others that support this idea? In what way might the psychosocial crisis be growth promoting?

What factors influence resilience in dealing with transitional stages?
Discuss cultural and religious approaches to the transition from childhood to adulthood.
How do you think optimism and pessimism might affect resilience?
What theories and findings of Erickson or Issacowitz, Vaillant, and Seligman (2003) support your view on resilience across transitions?
3. Q: Assumptions of Universality (ch3)
Consider the concepts of universality or the assumption that a theory has universal applicability in nay cultural context. Which of the theories in chapter 3 appear to be most universal? Which theories appear to be least applicable in a cross cultural context? How do some of the theories assume a modern, western society view (i.e. American)?
4. PQ: Adaptationa nd Flexibility (ch 3)
Many theories offer concepts for how humans change in response to societal and environmental conditions. What are the mechanisms of adaptation embedded in the theories?
Which theories place the greatest emphasis on flexibility and adaptation during a person’s lifetime?
Which theories place the least emphasis on flexibility and adaptation during a person’s lifetime?
