Assessment Item 2 – Written Essay
Dear Writer,
select something that is relevant to a small hospital (the hospital I will be doing my placement in is approximately a 50 bed hospital) in a very small country town in Southern New South Wales, Australia – name of the hospital is Tumut Hospital, should you wish to look it up.
I am thinking that perhaps the best ‘Topic/Risk Factor’ for this assignment is hand hygiene (or lack of it), nurses not washing their hands before EVERY patient contact or between patients, thus, increasing the risk of infection and cross-infection etc.
I require you to research, evaluate and discuss this issue impacting on patient outcomes and analyze what current or potential new strategies might be used to prevent these adverse outcomes from occurring to patients in the future. You need to review the current hospital policies concerning this infection control issue and discuss the potential adverse patient outcomes associated with this practice?
Your Nurse Unit Manager has requested that you compile a clinical discussion paper that will form a basis for a future presentation to be given to your nursing colleagues. Your target audience for this future verbal presentation will be: Clinical Nurse Educator, Registered & Enrolled Nurses and/or Student Nurse Peers who are working within the clinical setting that you are currently placed or within your most recent clinical placement setting.
This clinical essay must include:
• Title Page
• Executive summary: Is the overall summary of the entire essay (always on a separate page) and it should:
Introduce your topic of your essay
Indicate the main subjects/findings examined in the discussion section of your essay.
State your conclusions
State your recommendations.
• Table of Contents (always on a separate page and include page numbers throughout your essay).
• Page numbers are to be included in this written essay.
• Introduction (one paragraph): explaining the general context; map/direction of whole essay and a thesis statement. The thesis statement is that sentence or two in your introduction that presents your argument to the reader.
• Discussion: (the topic areas outlined above will form the plan for the discussion component). The body of the essay gathers and organises evidence that will persuade the reader of the logic of your interpretation. Therefore, the guiding principle of each main point should be: stated (topic sentence), explained what you have said in your topic sentence, proved & discussed your argument using research and link the information back to your topic sentence or to your next main point.
• Conclusion: Re-state you thesis statement; sum up your main points and finish with a final thought/ thought for the future.
• Reference list to be formatted according to the Abridge Guide to APA Referencing Style (6th edition)
• Instructions concerning the Essay:
Word limit for this assessment is 2000 words (+/- 10%). Not included in word limit are the Title Page, Executive Summary, Contents Page and Reference List.
12 point font
Double line spacing to be used.
Your clinical essay will be evaluated on the following assessment criteria:
i. Structure
ii. Discussion & Argument
iii. Referencing
I have provided this as a guide; please ensure you follow the HD criteria in the Rubric (I will attach) as you do for all other papers. Also, attached will be the assignment outline as provided to me from my University…..it has the Rubric attached to it.
I have sent this through to you early as, it is probably going to be a paper we will need to communicate heavily on due to its nature.
I thank you in advance. When/if you need to contact me in regards to this paper, please just send me through a message, as I check the site regularly throughout the day.
I will be out of town from 4th August – 11th August attending clinical labs, however, will attempt to check the messages daily.
Thanking You
Nicole
