Diversity and Multiculturalism
Diversity can hinder social integration. Often, when people of diverse backgrounds come together, they tend to join up into small groups constituted of people from similar social groups. More often than not, this grouping is inevitable. As a result, companies can experience informal divisions in their staff, creating a situation where culturally diverse members of staff avoid exposure to each other during breaks or after work. Although the grouping is essentially not wrong, it can hamper the possibility of sharing knowledge, skills and experience. Reduced sharing may ultimately result to slow growth and poor teamwork.
Increasing diversity may include mandatory training on diversity, during which stakeholders are taught on the best ways to interact with customers, clients and employees representing diverse populations. for some employees mandatory training is similar to forcing them to accept diversity, disregarding their personal experiences. Forcing employees to train on something may not bear the intended fruits. Multiculturalism may lead to phasing out of some cultures that were once in the organization in the past.
Diversity has contributed to my organization by enabling breakdown language barriers, and thus the organization has opened up branches in many parts of the world. At one point in the history of the organization, some foreign donors were really impressed with our work and decided to travel to our country in order to get in touch with us. By then the company was small, having fifteen employees. Two of the employees were of the origin of the foreign donors. When the news arrived of the coming of the donors it took us by surprise since we knew communication would be hindered by the language barrier. The two workers came to the rescue of the business and all went well. It was later that we realized that the foreign donors had all along been searching for a person of their origin doing such a tremendous job, to fund them. For the sake of the two employees the organization was granted a huge donation that enabled us offset our debts and expand.
Being a minority, a culturally diverse person may encounter several challenges. This challenges include; slow communication due to people not understanding his or her language, low sense of self-expression, boredom at work as people group themselves into groups of similar cultures, the employee may be sidelined during important meetings in order to make the meetings fast without having to repeat and interpret issues. The employees can be assisted by their superiors through several means. The means include; formulating diversity initiatives at the workplace. Every employee should be involved in coming up with and executing diversity initiatives at their workplace. The leaders can also encourage employees to foster equality and openness in expressing themselves, regardless of their diversity. Promoting diversity in leadership positions would also help show recognition for diversity and shield the minority from marginalization. Globalization requires a large capital investment to begin. This is true for some industries. As such, entry of small businesses into a global market is rarely witnessed. However, due to the increasing rate of e-commerce, small firms are rapidly taking on globalization by selling ovet the internet and even advertising to make local stores.
