What are the primary interventions and/or strategies/remedial strategies discussed in the study?
The case study explains briefly the primary interventions and strategies used on different age groups of children suffering from hemiparesis cerebral palsy. The main intervention is socialization. When these children are in a camp interacting with each other, they are socializing. Social skills are introduced on these children and guidance to use the taught. This takes place as they spend several hours every day together (Case-Smith & OBrien, 2014).
The other primary intervention is teaching these children independence. This is taught through techniques such as engaging them in challenging activities like housekeeping and preparation of their lunch. It is through this teaching of independence that they will be able to cope with their problem and become independent while growing up like the rest of the children without this disease.
When it comes to the remedial strategies that have been discussed in the article, it is evident that these children are having fun. Fun is a remedial strategy to ensure that the children get to learn as well as practice their primary strategies especially of independence. It is for this reason that the camps have themes such as Disney or even pirate that the children can identify with easily and assimilate.
Other than ensuring that they are having fun, the other remedial strategy is in the reinforcement of their positivity towards life. When the children are busy with activities and having fun at the same time, they tend not to worry about any negativity in their lives. The independence and socialization creates and restores an atmosphere of positivity and confidence (Case-Smith & OBrien, 2014).
The chapter highlights how intervention should take place in a childs natural environment in order to be most effective. In this particular case study P-CIMT camps were used as a primary intervention method,
Also combine with this info:
P-CIMT stands for Pediatric constraint-induced movement therapy which is a widely used intervention for children with hemiparesis cerebral palsy, the core elements of P-CIMT are 1) constraint of the child\”s less impaired UE, 2) selection of activities and techniques to elicit specific movements of the more impaired arm and hand, 3) high intensity intervention with repetition of targeted movements, 4) sessions in the child\”s natural environment, 5) systematic reinforcement that directs the child to attempt higher level skills or demonstrate increased strength and endurance, and 6) transfer of the intervention program to caregiver\”s and childs daily routines
