The BIG Research Paper

Assignment: Write a 1500-2000 word paper discussing, in detail, one of the assigned topics. Use at least three (3) different types of sources, and no fewer than six (6) different sources altogether. Your sources may include, but are not limited to: books, magazines, journals, newspapers, personal interviews and electronic sources. Be sure to evaluate all sources for timeliness, authority and completeness. Select only the best sources possible.

Grading Standards: This paper will be graded upon the essay structure (thesis, topic sentences, transitions, specific examples), how well ideas are presented and communicated, lack of grammatical/careless errors and overall effectiveness. Be sure to follow MLA style as discussed in class. Evidence of plagiarism (the offering of another person’s words or ideas as one’s own) will be grounds for receiving a zero for this project, and possibly, an ‘F’ for the semester. Failure to meet the assigned minimum in any area- word count or number of sources- will result in an automatic deduction of 20 points each.

Topic: Discuss the special challenges facing higher education.

This is a very broad topic, so you’ll need to narrow it down, even for a paper of this length.

You might consider issues like enrollment management, tuition, private vs public colleges, cheating, MOOC’s, athletics vs academics, etc.

Once you’ve had a chance to narrow your topic down, I recommend you submit it to me for approval

Rough drafts are due by 11:55 pm on Monday, July 27th
– Rough drafts MUST HAVE a minimum of 2000 words
– Rough drafts are required. Students who do not submit a rough draft will receive a zero for the assignment
