Essay

Assignment: Write a four-page research paper that discusses what’s wrong with the way composition is taught and what
should be done to improve how composition is taught.
Objectives:
1. Produce an insightful thesis that identifies what’s wrong with the way writing is taught.
2. Create well-developed and focused body paragraphs that describe the problems with the way writing is taught,
establish the extent of the problem (who’s affected and to what degree?), and propose solutions to the problems
you’ve identified.
3. Use your observations and research in order to build the body paragraphs, but you must quote from at least four
sources that have been peer-reviewed in order to meet the research requirement.
4. Show evidence of revision for paragraph structure and transition sentences.
5. Demonstrate the ability to quote and correctly cite quotes using MLA format.
6. Create an interesting title and opening.
7. Provide a meaningful conclusion that summarizes the main points, discusses their broader significance, and
revisits the ideas in the opening in order to create symmetry and inculcate main ideas. The conclusion should address the following: Why do the ideas matter? Why should the reader be interested in the ideas you discuss? What’s at stake if we don’t agree with you?
8. Create a works cited page that aligns with MLA standards and shows that you selected sources because of their relevance, credibility, and competence.
9. Revise for grammar.
10. Make one problem per body paragraph and one solution per body paragraph. You can use What Should Colleges Teach?
