Essay, English

Pinks Drive

In one paragraph, summarize a key idea from one of the chapters we read (Autonomy, Mastery, Purpose); then spend several paragraphs discussing how this idea might be applied in our ENG 101 class this semester through specific ideas and examples. For example, you could even narrow your focus by discussing just how understanding that mastery is an asymptote can help students succeed in ENG 101.

Dwecks Brainology:

In one paragraph, summarize Dwecks distinction between a growth and fixed mindset (or some other key idea related to Dwecks article); then spend several paragraphs discussing practices and behaviors that we can integrate into ENG 101 to foster and maintain a growth mindset.

Guidance for the essays:
Write for an audience who is NOT in our class. That means youll need to spend some time summarizing key ideas, defining any terms that might be unfamiliar for someone who has not read these articles, choosing quotes from the original reading to help your reader get a sense of what the author is talking about.
Include details, examples, and quotes from the reading to help you develop your own response to the question. If you quote, be sure to provide the page number in parentheses.
Talk about complexitiesfor example, if you are applying an idea from Drive to our class, think about what might make it difficult, not just why it would be good. If youre writing about Brainology, explore what Dwecks research suggests about fostering growth mindsets, but also think (and write) about challenges in applying or adapting her theory to student and instructor mindsets.
Try to focus each paragraph on a specific point related to your larger discussion and, at the same time, explore that point as fully as you can by developing ideas through details, examples, and quotes

Try to focus each paragraph on a specific point related to your larger discussion and, at the same time, explore that point as fully as you can by developing ideas through details, examples, and quotes.
Take the time to proofread after youve written your essay. Think about the kinds of mistakes you know you tend to make (like the spelling of words that sound the same) and watch out for those.
The bulk of the essay should be spent on discussing how you think these ideas could be incorporated into our course. Keep the summary of the key idea brief (like just one paragraph at the beginning) and use several paragraphs to develop several strategies for using these ideas in class.
To give me a well-developed essay, shoot for at least three full pages.
Also, use MLA format, and essay structure, including a clear thesis statement and connecting topic sentences to guide the reader through the essay easily.
Include an introduction that draws the reader into your paper.
Only sources in above should be used in the paper.
Make sure to cite each source you use above in MLA format.
Things to shoot for:

Be detailed when talking about experiences
Use time after you write to look over your sentences to ensure they are clear and as correct as you can make them. In short, give your best work possible in the time allowed.
Do brainstorming ahead of time.
Avoid abbreviations for words (use the full word and NOT &)
Avoid the pronoun you and text-ease (ur for your, i for I, etc.)
