Evaluate how their relationship contributes to the emerging complexity for the organization.

Management Pathway

The Complexity of Management

Introduction to the assignment

Traditionally the management of organizations has been presented as a logical and rational process based primarily on the activities of Planning, Leading, Organizing, and Controlling. However, although the effective implementation of these activities is crucial, the real world in which managers and organizations operate tends to be far more irrational and complex.

Every day the media brings to our attention organizational successes and failures. This in many cases is a vivid illustration of their ability or inability to work effectively with complex situations.

As preparation for your future roles as managers and leaders the purpose of this Module is to equip you with the academic and professional skills and techniques to investigate and diagnose the nature, source and significance of complexity within organizations.

The Assignment

The purpose of this assignment is to assess your ability to investigate and diagnose the nature, source and significance of complexity within organizations through applying appropriate academic theory and literature to real world situations.

Therefore you are required to prepare and produce a 2500 word written case study evaluation in which you;

• Broadly set out the context of the current situation of the case study organisation
• From your observations of issues facing the case study organisation map out the range of contributory factors
• From your mapping exercise use appropriate tools including models, theories, literature etc. to
o identify the most significant factors and
o evaluate how their relationship contributes to the emerging complexity for the organization

Planning the assignment

This assignment must be seen as a distinct piece assessment, and should not be based on any assignments currently or previously submitted for assessment.

Discussions within the class sessions will offer opportunities to discuss approaches to the assignment.

To help to shape, support and develop the assignment you should consider utilising the following indicative resources:
• Module reading list
• Business and Management Library guide – http://libguides.bcu.ac.uk/management
• Electronic resources available through Kenrick Library e.g. Summon, ABI, Emerald, MyiLibrary for access to a wide range of e-books
• Google Scholar
• Guidance and support from the Centre for Academic Success – http://library.bcu.ac.uk/learner/

There is a wealth of information available via the internet-however, in the spirit of the module you should consider how do you use this material in a more critical manner.

The assignment requirements and assessment guidelines will be introduced and discussed within class sessions, and posted on Moodle. These should be used to help prepare and plan the assignment, and to assist in the self-evaluation of your work prior to submission.

Please note this is an individual piece of assessment and you should ensure you have read and understood the University’s guidance on avoiding issues of alleged plagiarism and collusion. Advice is introduced within the Regulations pages – http://www.bcu.ac.uk/student-info/academic-regs) – and on the Centre for Academic Success Moodle page. If you have any additional questions on these issues it is essential to discuss them with a Module tutor. We reserve the right to put any assignments through our plagiarism software to detect inappropriate use of secondary sources, including books, other sources, Journals and internet sources. Where appropriate we may use a viva (‘an oral examination’) as part of the assessment process to help clarify and establish student understanding, and to examine the research undertaken for the assignment.

The Complexity of Management – Individual Assignment

2. Appraise the practice and theory of management to appreciate the complexity inherent in managerial action.
3. Analyse and evaluate management and organisation concepts and discuss their application to a range of contexts.
4. Examine the value and limitations of concepts, models and frameworks.
You will be assessed according to the following criteria:
a) Evidence of setting out the context of the current situation of the case study organisation
b) Evidence of observation of issues facing the case study organisation to map out the range of contributory factors
c) Effective use of appropriate tools including models, theories, literature etc. to
• identify the most significant factors and
• evaluate how their relationship contributes to the emerging complexity for the organisation
d) Effective communication, presentation and use of structure
e) Evidence of research and reading to select appropriate theories, concepts and frameworks (with appropriate referencing of sources – Harvard format)

The following are indicative of the threshold pass requirements for the assignment.
• The paper sets out some context of the current situation of the case study organisation
• Some evidence of the observation of issues facing the case study organisation to map out the range of contributory factors

• Some use of appropriate tools including models, theories, literature etc. to
o identify the most significant factors and
o evaluate how their relationship contributes to the emerging complexity for the organisation
• Some evidence of research and reading to select appropriate theories, concepts and frameworks (with appropriate referencing of sources – Harvard format)

• The level of communication and structure enables evidence of some understanding and discussion
The stronger assignments will clearly build on these threshold requirements to demonstrate increasing levels of originality, depth of research, criticality in terms of analysis, evaluation and depth of argument, and clarity of writing and structure. Discussion relating to the levels of assessment will be an integral part of class sessions and seminars.
