Overview
For the last seven weeks, we have examined a mythological idea (the Hero) through the lens of one particular theory (Campbell’s Heroic Journey of Transformation). We would be remiss if we let the course end there. Since Campbell’s death, many scholars have taken issue with Campbell and his ideas. One scholar who has taken a more balanced, academic look at Campbell’s work is our old pal Robert Segal. The readings for this week take a look at Campbell’s work and reconsider his legacy. Also, we will read Campbell’s own epilogue to see if we can discern how he understood the veracity of his own ideas. Your final exam will be to decide for yourself what Campbell’s legacy should be now that you are on expert on his theory. (See assignment Sheet for full details.)

The Paper
Begin by stating in a thesis your perspective on Campbell. Do you think he was right on? Why or Why not? Is his perspective still useful? Why or Why not? Really, you can start by just saying what you think of his approach as you have come to understand it this term.
Next, as you explain your perspective, respond to Segal. Is he right? Where? How? Is he wrong? Where? How? Either draw a contrast between your ideas and his or explain how your ideas are similar. In either case, you will need to make use of his articles (quotes). Also, make use of Campbell’s work as well.
