his quarter we are examining how various outside forces and influences affect and shape our identities.
We look at how different authors perceive themselves, how they are formed by their culture, their
language, their education and their race. We are also looking inward, at how the many different activities
and experiences make up a series of mini-cultures within our own lives.
Write a narrative essay modeled after Anna Quindlen’s “How Reading Changed My Life” in which you use
memory, description, observation, personal knowledge and analysis to support a claim about how a
particular culture within your life affects the greater whole of your life. Keep in mind that we are looking
at this activity as a separate culture (not a single event) so your analysis needs to go beyond surface level
opinions such as “I thought it was cool” or “my friends all did this so i thought I would try it.” I want you
to select something that has had a profound impact on your life or will have a profound impact in thefuture
like reading did for Quindlen. Consider something that connects to what occupation you are looking at for
your career. Consider a necessary life skill or survival skill important to you and/or your family that has
become a cornerstone in your life. Include your thinking and reasoning as well as the challenges you
faced and continue to face. We should have a clear understanding of who you were at the beginning, how
you changed throughout the process, and who you are now.
This essay is a narrative analysis in which you define and clarify the learning experience, examine its
causes and effects on you, analyze the meaning behind your growth and then offer a thoughtful solution
as to its place in your life today and the future.

1- Use Quindlen’s essay as a model and quote directly from it at least twice, working her ideas into
your narrative.
2- Find a connection from another essay from our text and include at least one quote and idea as
well. It will increase the academic strength of your writing.
3- Four full pages PLUS a Works Cited page
