The purpose of this essay is to give an overview of how alcohol is highly affecting the indigenous people of Australia mostly the ones who are living in remote and rural areas and the policies to respond to these problems. This is because alcohol is the most drugs that is widely abused among the Australia indigenous people. The hazardous alcohol use among the indigenous Australians has been reported to contribute highly to involvement of many into system of criminal justice as alcohol was found to be the third among other factors causing higher rates of indigenous Australians arrest. Most of the indigenous people adhere to the quote that goes by work hard and then drink hard as the only Aussie way (Hendersonet al, 2007). In addition, the indigenous people who highly consume alcohol are being termed as the real Australians. This makes alcohol to be termed as a glue that holds all the society of indigenous Australian together. In every occasion such as school activity, event of sporting, or anywhere the friends come together in the park taking has become the daily bread for them. In case one fails to drink during such occasion, he or she is perceived to have some mental problems. This essay discusses the effects of alcohol consumption and the policies underlying to ban alcohol consumption and its benefits to the indigenous people of Australia.
According Lee et al (2014), the knowledge on the methods of preventing alcohol misuse is extensive. Since most of the knowledge has not yet been translated into policies, evidence on whether the knowledge with the public could have a positive impact in the reduction of the harm is currently scant. However, translations of some of the indigenous programs and policies show promise: if they are well implemented in contextually and culturally competitive manner and if consultations with the local communities are effective, these policies may be of much help.
The non-drinkers aim the primary prevention strategies at preventing the up-take. These strategies are mainly informed by awareness and knowledge of protective and risk factors. These interventions start with prenatal as well as post-natal care. They include those programs that are designed to educate expectant parents on risks of drinking alcohol to unborn babies. Other interventions include parent and school education programs as well as various activities that may give alternatives to alcohol drinking such as recreational, cultural and sporting activities (Cussenet al, 2014).
Alcohol has seen to drive everything starting from marriage occasions to funerals not forgetting of the sporting events. Therefore, every occasion is termed as an occasion if alcohol is present. Aboriginal people are said to have problem with drinking alcohol but the non-aboriginal Australians have balanced. Approximately one third of the girl and half of the boys acknowledge that they drank extremely while in their adolescence or else in their 20s. Out of these more than 42% started heavy drinking of alcohol while at teenage. The binge drinking levels in Australia are fostered by lack of education, more exposure to promotion of alcohol and easy access to alcohol (Hendersonet al, 2007).
Consequences of alcohol consumption by aboriginal people
The aboriginals face death due to suicide or liver cirrhosis. Most of the death records are due to alcohol related causes. Alcohol leads to health problems as health problems such as pancreatitis, liver disease and any other cancer type. Due to alcohol addiction, many of the medical complications cannot be treated properly. In addition, some of the addicted aboriginal people to alcohol do not receive any treatment due to alcohol addiction (Barkeret al, 2007). Alcohol consumption also has led to breakdown of community due to community support lacking for the drinker. Social problems such as lack of direction and low self-esteem are also highly associated with consumption of alcohol. Due to alcohol addiction most of the parents focus becomes alcohol that in turn leads to breakdown of families as the children are neglected. Financial problems arise as most of the funds are spent on buying alcohol.
