Explain how their plan to apply various interpersonal skills during the scenario(s) was carried out or needed to be changed.

Utilizing the scenario the students will be required to write a pre-role-play paper. This paper should be 3 pages in length. Utilizing the position of initiator and incorporating the facts and background information presented in the scenario the student must respond and reflect in their paper on the following skills, their importance to the scenario, and how they can affect their ability, both positively and negatively, to participate in the scenario.

POST-ROLE-PLAY EVALUATION
Finally, students will write a reflection paper. Students will discuss how they attempted to and achieved specific communication goals during the role-play. Students will respond to the following questions in the paper.
1.Explain how their plan to apply various interpersonal skills during the scenario(s) was carried out or needed to be changed.
2.Explain whether or not they experienced any of the problems they believed they would encounter.
3.Explain how they addressed problems in a manner that aided in the building of a supportive communication climate or assisted with conflict resolution.
4.Explain how their research on new or different cultures aided in their ability to overcome multicultural communication barriers.
5.Explain how their research on new/different cultures aided in their ability to enhance multicultural communication.

ROLE PLAY

1.Coaching situation

Communicator and Situation
You are a parent whose child plays on a neighborhood little league team. You regularly attend the games and believe that healthy sports competition is an excellent experience for your child. A neighbor, Ms./Mr. Shaw has been a dedicated coach of this team for four years. He devotes much time and energy to the team, which last year made the state competition. His skills as a coach are excellent; he is a former major league baseball player whose career ended prematurely due to a back injury

Problem
Although M. Shaw has always been a demanding coach with the kids (ages 10-14), this year he seems to have gone overboard with an obsession of an undefeated team. He has become a tyrant at practice, verbally assaulting the players and creating low morale among some players. Your child has hinted that he/she wants to quit Little League because it is no longer any fun. A number of parents have discussed this problem, and you have agreed to be a spokesperson for the group. A rumor exists that Shaw may be scouted for a minor league coaching position.

Objective:
Without alienating Shaw, which might result in his/her quitting, you want to convince him/her that his/her current coaching philosophy and methods are not in the best interests of the kids and not appreciated by the parents.

2. SHOPPING SITUATION

Communicator and situation
You’ve always wanted to own a red convertible. A month after you take the car home, you discover that it has multiple problems. You’ve already taken it back for repairs twice. Now it is mysteriously is shutting off as you drive down I-95

Problem
You feel as though you bought a :”lemon.” You want to return the car to the dealer, get your money back and go to another brand’s dealer. But the dealer has been inundated with returns, and the sales force is tired of receiving abusive comments from customers..and there have been reports the manufacturer is about to go bankrupt, which means neither you nor the dealer with be able to get his money back.

Objective
Your objective is to return the vehicle for full refund. You want to convince the dealer that regardless of the manufacturer’s problems, he needs to protect his own reputation.

3. RESTAURANT AND KIDS

Communicator and situation
You at a fine restaurant with your spouse for what you hope will be a romantic dinner. At the adjoining table, sits a family with three children, ages 2, 5 and 10. The two–year-old hasn’t had a nap and is getting cranky — and is crawling under the tables. Indeed, the two year old almost tripper a waiter carrying a full tray of food.

Problem
How can you enjoy dinner with the 2 year old running all over the restaurant?

Objective
Without causing a scene, you want the parents to control their child. But they are focused on their cell phones, seemingly oblivious to the behavior of the child. How can you get them to take control of the situation?
