Job Interview Success
Job interview entails employment test that applies conversation between the interested applicant and the employer, usually represented by the Human Resource Officer. Job interview is a key aspect of the employee selection process. There are several categories of interviews according to questions applied. The interviews can be structured, unstructured, or freewheeling conversation. Employment research has indicated that structured interview is more effective than other interview categories. This is because structured interviews accurately predict the job applicant that can make competent employees. Employers analyze several constructs during job interview process. The construct are divided into three levels; job relevant issues, interviewee performance, and job irrelevant biases (Huffcutt 125).
For the job candidate to increase success levels during job interview, he or she must observe certain key issues. The five key issues are; ensuring fit test, researching on the employer organization, understanding the interviewers, being punctual, and maintaining appropriate appearance. The fit test concept ensures that organization and the job roles are in line with the competencies, social concepts, and the career goals of the interviewee. The applicant must have adequate abilities of adapting to the organizational culture and also the interests of the company. The perceived fit between the organization and the interviewee must be adequately shown at the initial stages of the job interview process (Schlenker 71).
The interviewee must adequately research on the employing organization. Research give the interviewee adequate knowledge on the company; and hence significantly increases the success rate. The most important company areas that should be researched on include; vision and mission statements, core values, organizational structure, and marketing strategies employed by the company. Researching the company vision enables the interviewee to know the ultimate goal of the company. The mission research creates understanding on the operations of the company. The core concepts illustrate the main concepts that the organization values; for example, team spirit and customer focus. Research on the organizational structure enables the interviewee to understand the relating relationship in the organization between employees and managers.
Understanding the interviewers is also an important factor that improves interview success. It is currently very easy to collect information on members of the interview panel. This is due to the presence of internet research programs like Google, social media and LinkedIn. Researching on the internet site will generate adequate information on the careers, job titles and work responsibilities of all members of the interview panel. Many companies also have background information of its key personnel on the website. Researching the website will enable the interview to understand the qualifications of the key staffs in the organization. The interviewee should use the background knowledge during interview session; for instance, addressing the panel members through titles and names.
Being punctual during all stages of the interview process enhances the success levels of the candidate. Punctuality illustrates good organization abilities. Many employers consider punctual candidates as effective and efficient. This is because they are perfectly capable of achieving work projects according to schedules. Punctual employees also illustrate interest in the company and also capability of delivering work targets effectively under pressure. Punctuality during job interview illustrates the work nature of the employee. This is because in most cases, the punctuality will be transferred to job projects.
Candidates, who have suitable appearance during job interviews, have high success changes. Many employers value the image of their employees; therefore, good appearance is important. One area of appearance entails dressing code. The interviewee should dress according to the organizational culture. For instance, many insurance companies prefer employees to wear formal business suits. However, many online companies prefer casual wear for their staffs. Appearance is also illustrated through body posture. The interviewee should be calm and relaxed. This increases success levels during job interviews.
Job relevant category has questions that analyze successful performance of job. General trait questions are relevant to the job. The mental ability of the applicant has to be analyzed; for instance, ability of the interview to process information effectively. Personality aims at ensuring the interviewee is open to new issues and emotionally stable. Interest and values aim at analyzing the goals of the interviewee and also the organizational fit (Schlenker 68). The experiential category studies the education, training and the experience levels of the applicant. The core job issues involve motivation and procedural capabilities. Motivation enables an employee to put extra effort in a job; while procedural capabilities enable an employee to competently perform a job.
Interviewee performance illustrates the behavior of interviewee during interview process. The social behavior explains social skills levels of the applicant; for instance, ability to relate properly with coworkers. Interpersonal presentation entails verbal and non verbal expressions. An applicant must use moderate voice pitch during interview process. Also, applicant should also apply appropriate facial expressions during interview. The job irrelevant issues in interview include attractiveness, race, gender or religion. Attractive interviewee generally scores higher in interviews. If the employer representative and the applicant are of the same gender, religion or race; then the interview process is smoothed and the candidate is likely to score high results (Huffcutt 126).
