Discuss 1:In Edgewalkers Chapter 1 Krebs asks Meme if she is a wild Indian, and Meme responds by stating “I’m a real Indian” meaning that Meme, just like any other human being has feelings and emotions. Krebs later writes about how much the media influenced her change of view towards Meme and the Native Americans in general. I thought this was very powerful for the simple fact that here we have someone (Krebs) that has been brought up by a Native American (Meme) and loves and cares so deeply for this individual, has memories and has seen first-hand the embracement that Meme and her husband have provided her with and is still influenced by stereotypes that the media is portraying. After watching the video in regards to the Red Skins a football team changing their name, it brought flash backs of the book. We already know how much impact the media has on us and we still allow such thing to happen. I believe that if the Native Americans don’t agree with such term “Red Skins” or “Indians” then we should respect that as a community. There has been times where I have found myself saying “you’re so Mexican” or “only Mexicans do that” but then again I get so offended when others outside my race or culture use that term. The more I read Edgewalkers I am beginning to paint a clearer picture of how things (life) really work. We have to start with change, and understanding within ourselves in order to try to empower others and educate other over this issue. There is so much beauty in embracing and understanding ones culture.( Stephanie Garcia Author)
Discuss 2:The response that Meme gave by stating that “I’m a real Indian” to Nina B. Krebs was a statement that challenges the misleading portrayals of Native Americans. By stating that “I’m a real Indian”, in contrast to “wild Indian”, Meme effectively exclaims that she is not some untamed animal that American media and literature falsely painted her out to be. The term “wild” has generally been used towards animals, and by no means, are Native Americans somehow the same thing. This is important since it is vastly important to see a person as who they are and not through the eyes of others. Meme wants to show that she, like any other human being, is perfectly capable of behaving like any other person and is nothing like the wild savages that many stereotypical movies tend to falsely illustrate. Because of these incorrect illustrations, Native Americans fall prey to being another discriminated group and although many steps have been taken in the last few decades to fight racial inequality, problems for Native Americans still exist to this day. One particular example is the football team named “Redskins”, which not only can openly offend Native Americans, but also impedes on the growth and development of edgewalking in society. Being culturally consistent on a basis is perhaps one of the greatest challenges when it comes to edgewalking and by having to embrace a name that shames them, Native Americans are then being pushed to mainstream society. This is wrong and while it is important to resist cultural negativity, it should never stretch to cultural ignorance, since cultural diversity should always be embraced positively and our differences make us who we are. Edgewalking and molding in between the cultural borders is essential for the future growth of our society.I don’t entirely feel like Meme or the others in the video but I certainly believe that as of our current time, there is a great deal of tension with Syrian refugees. With the constant pressure and at times, unnecessary hatred, I’m concerned that Syrian refugees are trying to suppress their identities for the sake of their safety and having to feel ashamed of your identity is something I feel that no one should ever be forced to do.( NN author)
