The representation of the black woman in television and film has continuously been wrought with the indication that they are resolved to a stereotype. Throughout history we have seen the common stereotypes of the mammy, sapphire and Jezebel utilized as the main character for the dialogue, demeanor and script of what it means to be a black woman. In the more recent years we have witnessed the emergence of the “angry black women” as an added layer of interpretation, being the modern version of the sapphire. This study seeks to demonstrate that that the majority of black women are not congruent with their depictions in television and film and that these very depictions greatly influences the attitudes society has towards the black woman
