In interpreting Qur’anic verses, there are two popular methods: ‘textualist’ and ‘contextualist’ approaches. What kind of approaches would you prefer and why? Please discuss these two methods and your own position with reference to particular case studies in Muslim or non-Muslim countries that involve ONE of the following issues:
•Whether a Muslim husband is (not) legitimate to beat his wife even at his own home (see Q. An-Nisa 4: 34)
•Whether a Muslim is (not) permitted to be in touch with a modern-day bank that provides interest (see Q. Ali Imran 3: 130)
•Whether a Muslim is (not) allowed to vote for a non-Muslim politician as his/her representative in the Parliament (see Q. Ali Imran 3: 28)
Making reference to a number of contemporary translations of the Qur’an as well as some classical exegeses of the Qur’an on those issues are strongly encouraged.
