Methods and Methodology
This chapter is a consideration of literature written about research design only. It is not a review of literature about your chosen topic of focus. The taught sessions of this module highlight theoretical material appropriate to include in this chapter. Supplement the sources analysed during the PR6817 taught module sessions with your own reading around research skills.
“Research methods are the research tools, for example, questionnaires, observation, statistical analysis” used in the research process.
Newby (2010, p.51)
Methodology seeks to explain how and why a particular method must be adopted for a particular piece of research.
Clough and Nutbrown (2012)
Examples of research methods
• Focus groups
• Interviewing
• Observations
• Surveys
• Questionnaires.
Methodology
• Acknowledge your understanding of why particular methods were chosen.
• Justify and give reasons for your choice of method, defend them.
• How do your method/s of data collection enable you to address your specific research question/s?
• Reflect on the advantages and disadvantages in practice of your chosen methods and methodological approach.

I am going to upload my literature review so you know what my research dissertation is about. I have used semi-structured interviews with three different headteachers (Qualitative data), two who employ sports coaches to undertake their physical education lessons and one headteacher who just uses his teachers. You need to talk about how qualitative data is much better than quantitative data for my research. it is important for you to talk about how semi structured interviews were the best for me as they will allow the headteacher to be honest and elaborate, where as if I used questionnaires they could feel restricted due to the space they have to write on and they may just put down something quickly to get it over and done with. it is important if we talk about the nature of epistemology at the start briefly. ethical considerations need to be mentioned towards the end so how I gained access to my participants (3 headteachers, gained consent and right to withdraw, what I would do with my recorded data, who had access to it. also need to mention about validity, reliability and triangulation, so how I used a sample of three headteachers to gain reliability and a sample of two headteachers who employ sports coaches and one headteacher who doesn’t.
