Scope: We are trying to revamp the Ruskin High School athletic problem. Athletics has the power to change communities. In the past few years, Ruskin’s students and the Hickman Mills community has been overshadowed with bad publicity both in and outside of school. Our student athletes are doing positive things however, we need help in aiding them with facilities, equipment, and training that will allow them to a compete with the school districts in which they play whom already have these resources. This will catapult the inspiration needed to recruit, mentor, strengthen, educate and form student leaders in which can help bring change the Hickman Mills community. Our locker room facilities are decrepit, our training room needs maintenance, and most importantly we need a weight room! In the past (1970’s – 1980’s), the Ruskin High School sports teams were pretty good and students we’re earning athletic scholarships. Since the merger a few years ago, the football team hasn’t won more than 5 games over the past 5 years and not many students have academically qualified to get athletic scholarships. Track & Field and basketball is up and down, and all of our other sports teams have failed miserably. We have around 1,500 students 9-12 grade however, because of the lack of wins, not many students want to be a part of the losing teams. Parents are moving talented kids to other school districts to play sports. Fundraisers have been getting little to no returns and parents haven’t been interested in participating in a booster club. As a matter of fact, Ruskin has to hire people in order to open the concession stands for home games. We have fixed some of the coaching problems however, funds are our biggest issue. The district only allots limited funds per year for all athletic sports in the Hickman Mills C-1 School District. We are in an athletic and community crisis and need some financial assistance to get us out of this rut.
