Gender Roles in Modern Society

When was the last time you saw a boy playing with a doll in a commercial? Or a girl using the newest NERF gun? Advertisements use demographics and stereotypes to target children and encourage them to dress, act, and become a certain type of individual. These gender roles are a very real part of modern day life including advertising, the work force, politics, sports, and social interactions.
200,000 years ago homo-sapiens began to spread across Africa. The tribes were typically divided equally into males, who hunted, and females, who gathered. These roles were set in place through evolution over millions of years which made male apes physically larger than the females. As agriculture was discovered around 7,000 B.C. the physical differences between males and females gave the males a huge advantage when it came to farming and marginalized women in the early societies. As these cultures grew, the class system began to take shape and women became a tool for men to create offspring to give their farms and wealth to as well as to create bonds with other families for social improvement. These further demoted women and they eventually became property of the men who want to develop socially.
