Critical Literature Review
Length: at least 2000 words
Rationale Part of being a professional Exercise and/or Sports Scientist or Physiologist is the ability to critically review research evidence in order to ensure practice activities are evidence based. Much of the evidence base in sports science is now very biochemistry/molecular biology based.
Task
Prepare a Seeded Critical Literature Review
Topic: Any area of Genetics of sports performance directly related to material presented in the seed article.
Seed article (attached pdf): Marek Sawczuk, Lauren K. Banting, Paweł Ci˛eszczyk et al., MCT1 A1470T: A novel polymorphism for sprint performance?, Journal of Science and Medicine in Sport 18, 114- 118, 2015.
Step 1: Read the SEED paper for your topic
Step 2: Work out your specific topic within the overall topic(s) of the seed article– must be directly related to the SEED paper.
Step 3: Find 3 ORIGINAL research articles on your topic from reputable quality journals on your specific topic.
Step 4: Write a critical literature review of the 4 papers. Your 3 articles plus the SEED paper.
The assessment must be organised and structured using appropriate headings and sub-headings and should be at least 2000 words (excluding figures, tables, and the list of references) and include the following headings;
1. Introduction – clearly introduces topic and provides a brief overview of relevant literature.
2. Review of Literature – outline the literature used and then critically analyse and synthesise the main findings of the papers you reviewed. Subheadings may be used in this section if felt necessary.
3. Conclusion – A brief summary, you should look to include practical application
4. References – Vancouver format – and within recent 10 years
Introduction:
– Background – high distinction – Background to the topic is exemplary. All key essential concepts are defined. Clearly describes the main issue examined and delineates relevant subtopics where necessary.
– Purpose of the review – high distinction- Purpose is described with specific detail in clear and concise manner.
Review of Literature:
– Comprehension of topic: high distinction – Specific details of key concepts provided with clear and comprehensive explanations and/or multiple perspectives discussed, maintains focus on pertinent points, inclusion of no irrelevant information and/or and free of factual errors. Reader gains substantial insights.
– Support: Exemplary analysis/ discussion of research evidence. Many examples provided to demonstrate theory in practice. Demonstrates an excellent capacity to support arguments made and apply theory to practice.
– Organisation and Structure – Material is exceptionally cohesive, very well organised and structured, which allows explicit understanding of content. Relationships and connections between all ideas are clearly established and follows a logical sequence.
-Original thinking and or critical analysis – Extensive evidence of won ideas about the topic and/or extensive analysis of the supporting material.
Conclusion:
– Summary: An exemplary summary is provided that includes all of the points raised in the review
– Practical Application – An exemplary evaluation of the main arguments made and/or application towards exercise physiology practice.
Literacy/ Referencing:
– Level of Literacy: Free of errors. Comprehension of content is enhanced by exemplary written expression, grammar and spelling
