Global Sourcing Assignment
Global sourcing is a controversial topic. Search local, regional, or national newspapers or magazines that have stories about companies that have outsourced some piece of their value chain to another country. Based on what you read, answer the following questions:
- What were the company’s reason /justification for outsourcing?
- What do you think the impact (advantages and disadvantages) to the local and or national stakeholders (employees; consumers; governments – local and national; suppliers; local and national “economies”) were?
- Discuss whether or not YOU agree with the company’s decision and why.
I expect a minimum of 3-4 paragraphs for each question . Simple one or two sentence answers are unacceptable. I expect you to demonstrate your “critical thinking” skills.
You must defend your answers/opinions using material from the lectures, textbook, or other reference material.
Be sure to properly cite references using whatever method you are comfortable with.
Your answers will be graded on both content (how well your answer and you defend your answer) and style (you’re writing skills, grammar, style, etc.)
Suggestion – look for companies in such industries as textiles, clothing, shoes, furniture, automotive parts, machine tools, or consumer electronics, as well as back-office business processes, such as accounting and call-center customer support. New sources such as the Financial Times, Wall Street Journal, and BusinessWeek have many stories about companies that have used global sourcing. You can also research companies using Hoovers.com, Standard & Poor’s, Merchant Online, and company Web sites to learn about their experiences with global sourcing.
