Since Edward Snowden’s leak of substantial American National Security Agency documentation in 2013, there has been an increasing debate on the effects of ‘big data-based’ state and corporate surveillance over a substantial proportion of the global population. Meanwhile, the proliferation of drones raises worrying questions about the relationship between media, surveillance, and weaponry.
• How do state and corporate surveillance mechanisms produce forms of social sorting through new media systems?
• How are drones being used in new everyday contexts, and what are the consequences of this?
Write a short essay (2000 words) that builds upon the research proposal you submitted for Assessment Task 1. In particular, you will need to expand on the critical scholarly reading you engaged in to complete your annotated bibliography, showing independent research skills. For this task it is also required that you draw in some capacity upon at least one of the critical debates covered in the teaching weeks.
