“Dating back to the 17th century the family was responsible for caring for family members from birth to death without any assistance from government resources. It was not until the 19th century that family or domestic laws became recognized. Schubert (2015) noted that “the legal definition of family becomes important because special rights, benefits, and privileges favor family membership. Some of these benefits are intangible, such as the societal approval that accompanies birth, marriage, and to some extent adoption” (p.311). Through the years family law has went from the father being the head of the household to individual rights for every family member. I feel that it is important to have laws to protect family members and the laws should be no different within or outside the family. “Society, through government, has a legitimate right to prevent the maltreatment and abuse of family members” (p.310).
