Scenario
Oxford is a popular tourist destination for both domestic and international visitors, who come to see the historic buildings, visit museums, soak in the literary atmosphere, attend events, shop in Bicester Village Outlet Centre, explore the nearby countryside, etc. There are a range of hotels in Oxford including well known branded hotels and a range of independent ones. Imagine that you are working for a small privately owned hotel company, which already owns two hotels in England, and is considering opening a third hotel in or near Oxford.
Task 1 Investigation of the hospitality industry in Oxford.
The owner recognises that it is important to understand hospitality and tourism in Oxford, if the hotel is to be a success. You have been asked to investigate and make recommendations.
The findings from task one should be submitted in a written report with an introduction at the beginning and a conclusion at the end. The suggested word length for this report is 2000 – 2500 words, excluding any appendices. Include a bibliography of all sources used in the Harvard Referencing Format, showing use of at least ten sources.
The analytical report should be structured as follows:
a) Introduction, which includes a short description of Oxford, including some of its main tourist attractions and hospitality businesses. Do not forget to include citations, as required.
b) General discussion about how hospitality businesses and tourism / travel businesses in Oxford interrelate with each other. A good discussion shows understanding of the broad picture of interrelationships between tourism and hospitality in Oxford, based on use of information from a range of sources. Ann excellent discussion concludes with your justified personal analysis of the suitability of Oxford as location for a new hotel and the target tourist market it should seek to attract.
c) Case study in which there is discussion of the interrelationship between one particular tourism sector in Oxford (e.g. visitor attractions, inbound tour operators, passenger transport, MICE tourism, etc.). An excellent case study discusses relevant issues in depth and reaches a sound conclusion.
d) Analysis of the implications of integration within the hospitality industry. A good analysis will consider both the impacts and implications of increased integration in the hospitality industry. An excellent analysis should help the owner to make a decision about whether the new hotel should be owner managed, operated as a branded franchise or managed by another company under a well – known brand name, by clearly evaluating advantages and disadvantages of the different options.
e) Discussions of how integration has affected a case study hotel, e.g. branding, general management, standardisation, quality, etc. Good discussions are well reasoned.
f) Conclusion which brings together all that has been learnt from the analytical study
