THESIS STATEMENT: Iran threatens the national interest of the US through the use of proxies in Yemen. Yemen, as a key US ally is now threatened by the Houthi who have been armed and trained by Iran. The fall of Yemen to radical insurgents would greatly endanger the constant flow of oil from Saudi Arabia, and would allow Iran to gain control of the traffic through the Suez Canal.
Although the U.S. has significantly reduced its dependence on international oil markets, according to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, it still imports significant quantities of petroleum that comes mostly from the Middle East region through the Suez Canal. Yemen is located right on a chokepoint that connects the Mediterranean Sea and the Indian Ocean called Bab el-Mandeb Strait. Houthi insurgents could ultimately let Iran take control of this strategic chokepoint
