REQUIRED PAPERS:
Your job is to write a carefully considered and efficient summary of the principal message(s) that the authors have presented in each one of the assigned chapters. Each chapter summary (with the chapter number clearly indicated) shall be double spaced with 12-point type and no more than 50 lines long (except for the first paper which may be twice that long). 50 lines are comparable to approximately two and a quarter pages (on standard paper). There will be a grade penalty if you go substantially over 50 lines (100 lines in the case of Chapter 2). If you need fewer than 50 lines to cover one chapter, you may add the unused lines to the 50 allowed on another chapter summary in the same set. Each chapter summary will be worth up to 100 points. Note: diagrams are welcome and may be on separate sheets attached to the chapter summary, but diagrams without explanations are useless. Explanations in captions to diagrams do not count toward the 50 line limit.
IMPORTANT: The form of your writing is to be what is called a précis (an accurate but shortened version of an original work). You are not to write essays. An essay is “your take” on the material. A précis is your understanding of “the author’s take” on the material. You are to tell me what you believe that the authors told you, but DO NOT quote them and DO NOT use simple rearrangements of their words (because neither exposes whether you understand the material). To be successful, you will need to sit back after reading the chapter and think for awhile about what you have just read and about what it all adds up to. What you write must faithfully reflect what the authors wrote and must not be distorted by any of your own attitudes or opinions.
