Assignment Task/Brief and Assessment Criteria

The assessment for this module is a 3,000 word essay exploring an issue involving clinical and professional leadership in health care.

You need to:

Select and explore a leadership scenario that you have been involved in at work;
Analyze the scenario using relevant theories of leadership studied in the module;
Discuss the implications for your practice.
Discuss what you could have done to resolve any challenges, problems or dilemmas in the scenario, drawing on relevant theory;
Discuss how you would develop future practice in the light of this experience, drawing on relevant theory to justify your work.

Choosing your leadership scenario

It is important that the assignment you write deals with leadership issues rather than operational or clinical issues. Where some previous assignments have been less successful is in focusing on a situation which actually centres upon operational or clinical factors rather than leadership issues.

– For example, if a drug error is made and there is subsequently an argument as to how the error came about, that would not be a leadership issue.

– Or if a patient deteriorates suddenly and no one in the team noticed the signs that would not be a leadership issue.

A leadership issue is not about operational or clinical details; it is about the ways in which people engage, interact, communicate, are motivated (or demotivated); collaborate; influence and persuade. A critical incident in which there are leadership issues, then, is thus something more along the lines of:

– At a recent team meeting there was fundamental disagreement between two team members as to what the motives are behind an impending department restructure. The team leader sought to reconcile the two but the meeting became even more heated on account of inappropriate style of addressing the situation.

– My team practises a model of distributed or shared leadership and while this generally works well, a crisis incident arose where there was no clear leader.

– At a recent team briefing I was tasked with introducing a new patient data system to colleagues who were largely unengaged with the idea and unmotivated to take on anything new.

You will see that each of the above critical incidents embodies ongoing leadership issues that involve the challenge of persuading, influencing, engaging and motivating. It is this kind of incident that your essay needs to focus upon.
