The clinical learning environment is structured to provide a health care service rather than focus on
student learning. Thisis a very different focus to the university classroom, where student learning is
most important. In order to benefit from the learning opportunities in the clinical environment,
students are encouraged to develop a wide range of learning strategies.
The prescribed textbooks for this unit, Levett-Jones and Bourgeois (2011) and Crisp et al. (2013),
demonstrate that the clinical environment is an excellent place to learn about and consolidate
knowledge related to bioscience, ethics, law, procedures, systems, relationships,
communication…..the list goes on. For nursing students, the experience can be overwhelming and
preparation is essential.
Reflection on your own learning, where you think about how you have learned in the past and what
new learning strategies you might develop, is an important first stage. For this assignment, you will
be invited to review nursing literature on how nursing students learn. You are expected to reflect on
the findings from these authors’ work and discuss your learning preferences and areas for
development.
You are also invited to learn more about the type of services that will be provided to patients, clients,
and/or residents during your placement. You will need to undertake research on what types of
services are provided, describe the consumer base, and then identify three learning objectives for
your placement. These are not your only objectives on placement. This assignment aims to develop
your skills in setting clear strategies for your learning and development.
The learning plan will consist of two parts. The first section will discuss the rationale for the
selection of the three objectives included in the learning plan template. This section will be not more
than 800 wordsin length. The second section will be the learning plan template. It will consist of
three learning objectives, including strategies and resources to achieve the objective and an
indication of what evidence you will use to determine that the learning objective has been met. A
template for the Learning Plan is found on page 7 of the Bachelor of Nursing Student Clinical
Placement Assessment Guide 2013.
