Living with Cerebral Palsy: Exploring the benefits of an Intensive Exercise Program and the TheraSuit method.
this is the abstract
Cerebral Palsy (CP), an umbrella term used to define a group of non-progressive disorders of movement and posture, is the most common cause of severe neuro-disability in children. There have been various interventions used on children with CP to improve posture, gross motor control and balance, with one of them being an intensive exercise program and the use of therasuit. This is a diverse method used by many patients, of any ages, bringing numerous advantageous outcomes. TheraSuit and the use of the Universal Exercise Unit (UEU) can be complex to understand and thus the information provided about these methods need to be dissected to be better understood by everyone. The purpose of this project was to investigate the various benefits of an intensive exercise program, using TheraSuit on children living with CP. Research methods included extensive literature review exploring cerebral palsy, the impact of cerebral palsy on vestibular movement and proprioception and muscle strengthening and reconditioning. An observation of a therapy session using the UEU and TheraSuit method took place to gain primary information from live experiences. Information was also gathered and reviewed from databases (CINAHL, PsycINFO, Cochrane, PubMed, OTseeker), reputable websites, textbooks and scholarly literature. The results indicated that TheraSuit has high levels of effectiveness regarding functional progression as well as occupations that were learned or improved. The studies also showed that using the TheraSuit during an intensive exercise program had great improvements in vestibular function. It is recommended that further research around the UEU and TheraSuit method is conducted to promote this intervention and educate practitioners of the various benefits it brings to children living with CP.

As such this unit aims to give you the independent research knowledge and skills that you can take beyond your degree and into the real world of professional practice where you will encounter many issues or challenges that you will want to investigate in a scholarly and systematic way. It also allows final year students to investigate a topic of their choice which will also enable them to begin undertaking more indepth research into specialisations that they may wish to pursue post graduation.

Exceptional Work – This work moves well beyond what would normally be expected for the student’s level of learning. The work is structured appropriately, deeply analytical and well supported by relevant and appropriate research findings/ literature pertaining to the project topic. The work completes all tasks set by the assignment and is distinguished by lucid and orderly thinking. There is strong evidence of critical thinking, introduction of an original interpretation and exploration of the topic area and clear implications for occupational therapy. The ideas are clearly evident and complement the arguments by either supporting or contrasting by what is said by others. It is virtually free from errors of mechanics, usage and sentence structure. There is evidence of superior control of language. The problem/ issues or concerns/themes are stated in the beginning, logically and cogently pursued, supported by appropriate use of references and the conclusion is realistic and fits with the body of content.
