Oneofthegoalsofthisclassisforyoutolearntheproperstepsforconductingresearchin
modern/contemporaryarthistory.Towardthatend,youaretochooseasingleworkofart,
fromthelistbelow,andresearchit.Youwillproduceanannotatedbibliography,whichwillbe
dueatthebeginningofclassonFriday,May6th.
Anannotatedbibliographyconsistsofalistofsources(inalphabeticalorderbyauthorslast
name)onaparticulartopic,whichincludesashortdescriptionofeachsource.Thepurposeof
suchabibliographyisbothtohelptheresearcherwhocomposesittocompiletheinformation
shehascollectedinaproductiveformat,andtohelpherbegindraftingaliteraturereview,
whichwillbeessentialtoanyscholarlystudyonthesubject.Suchbibliographiesarealsouseful
forfutureresearchersandprovideimportantcontributionstoscholarship.
Thedescriptionsinyourbibliographyshouldbeaparagraphortwoinlength.Theyshould
explainthe kindofsource(e.g.,anexhibitioncatalogue,journalarticle,exhibitionreview,
popularmagazineornewspaperarticle,archivaldocument,scholarlymonographoranthology,
etc.);describewhatgeneralaspectofthetopicthetextaddresses;enumeratethekey
argumentsthetextmakesandpointsofviewitadopts;anditshouldappraisetheusefulnessof
thetext.
