Media and Communication in a Globalizing China

Students are required to write a 3500 word answer to one of the questions below. The essay answer should include theoretical and conceptual arguments in addition to reporting relevant empirical developments (information about which can be derived from existing literature—no primary research is required). The questions are deliberately open to interpretation, and each could be addressed from different perspectives. Students are free to determine the exact focus of their answers, but should provide an indication and explanation for their choice in the introduction. There is no single ‘right answer’, instead I am looking for a well structured, cogent arguments supported by evidence (books and other materials that you cite or refer to). It is important not to exceed the word limit (3500 words excluding references and bibliography), which is there to encourage you to develop the skills to think, organize and write effectively. The word limit is designed to help you identify the crux of the issue, state what it is and provide a well-organized and clearly presented analysis. In order to produce a strong essay, students are strongly recommended to make use of relevant core, recommended and further readings indicated in this handbook, and to draw on other academic sources as appropriate.
It is very important that most of your sources are academic.
