MILITARY HISTORY – THE UNITED STATES AS PACIFIC POWER

Prior to the 19th Century, the U.S. was not interested in its expansion overseas, but rather focused on its expansion at home. However, influential Americans began to argue that the U.S., like other nations such as Britain and France, should begin to explore the idea of colonies overseas. THe idea that the U.S. needed bases overseas for its military was one of the arguments for expansion. Several factors led to the U.S. becoming a Pacific power; one of those was the Spanish-American War.
