New Venture Creation

COURSEWORK 2

An individual Mahara page giving an evaluation of the opportunity to start a new venture as presented in the group poster.  This component of assessment is weighted at 75% (the group poster at 25%).

Learning outcomes and pass attainment level:

  • Identify and justify the market/social opportunity for the creation of a new venture
  • Collect, collate and analyse appropriate qualitative and quantitative information to support the business case
  • Critically reflect upon the skills and capabilities needed for delivery of a new venture

To pass:

The individual portfolio (Mahara page) will be mostly complete with some detail, and include an electronic file of the group poster.   Skills and expertise will be evidenced but with some possible shortcomings.  A business case for the product or service opportunity would be seen as reasonable but with some possible drawbacks.  The poster and analysis would evidence group working but again with some possible shortcomings.  The outcome would be seen as reasonable in most aspects.

In this part of the assessment, you need to evaluate the opportunity to create a new venture as presented in the poster.

Your tutor will have a paper copy of your poster (submitted in your workshop) to check your work.  You should add an electronic version of the poster to your Mahara page.  You should only include a copy of the group poster if you have made a significant contribution to the work of the group.  You should submit your Mahara page to the link provided on Moodle by 12.00 noon Thursday 19th December, 2013.

You will need to evaluate the opportunity to start a business as presented in the poster.  You should:

  • Examine the feasibility of your business (technological, financial, operational feasibility):
  • Critically appraise the industry analysis in terms of strengths and weaknesses. If you consider further analysis and research worthwhile, you can add more detail.
  • Suggest a legal structure for the business activity
  • Provide a start-up budget and cash flow for the first three years
  • In the financial feasibility analyse the financial assumptions made about cost and sales
  • Suggest a marketing strategy outline with some explanation for the reasons for the chosen channels
  • Present the business model and value creation for all stakeholders.

You will also have to reflect on your own skills, attitudes, knowledge and behaviour in relation to being your own boss in business:

  • consider your own career plans and whether this business opportunity represents an opportunity for you personally.
  • decide whether you would give this business proposal a YES or NO
  • consider your own problem solving preferences, your scope to network and your attitude to risk, your personal entrepreneurial traits and ambition (include test results from any entrepreneurial tests done) and your creativity and problem solving skills.

You will receive a partial grade for using Mahara effectively, so do not just attach a few word files or picture files. You have to use the features the software offers.

I highly recommend adding and using digital tools such as

Video, Prezi.

The outcome of this individual work should be in the form of a Mahara page outlining your understanding of this opportunity with a business evaluation.  Your Mahara page should include an electronic copy of the poster produced by your group (and you should acknowledge the work of others).  You can include attachments such as Excel files as attachments with further details, however, the data need to be explained on the Mahara page.

The word guide is 2000 to 3000 words.
