Organisation Analysis Culture

Examine critically the claim that organization culture can – and should – be managed. What are the arguments for and against managing culture

This is how I want it and I want you to use this book Cunliffe, A. L. (2014) A Very Short, Fairly Interesting and Reasonably Cheap Book About Management.
London: Sage Publications. 2nd Edition.

Can culture be managed?
* Changing the culture will affect the organization
* People who want a change in the organization can be manipulated by management gurus who are in search of excellence, this started in the early 1980’s. ref 1
* People who try to manage ensure people follow their system saying it’ll work. However, looking at it realistically it will not work because a culture is a lifestyle and it is embedded into people. Ref 2
* FOR AND AGAINST FOR MANAGERS
* Jeff Bezzons (ref 3) – it takes nuclear weapons to change a culture. You will have to change heart of the mind of everyone. A culture is a stable version of what everyone believes.
* Kert lewin (ref 4)– culture: changes small amounts, big change takes a huge amount of effort.
* Managers put code of practice which makes it hard to change culture. People will change their mind for a moment but being too used to their lifestyle they will stay set in their ways. (ref 5)- slaughter house- ackroyd – type slaughter house in google

SHOULD IT BE MANAGED?

* Annes book ref 6 : should it change? Culture can have a dark side, can be a cult – whatever someone says goes – this might pressure people. You will be excluded if you do not follow the rules. FOR
* Ennon ref 7 biggest company in America – people were getting paid for bonuses but it was illegal. People were also putting pressure on other people so they would not tell, this could also be regarded as keeping a secret or keeping something hidden. – FOR
* Although there is a culture within an organization, people should not be paid for their heart and soul in addition to their work labour. This is a high expectation which is not fair. AGAINST
* Linder hochscild (ref 10): emotional labour – part of emotion which is not fair. – something you have or something it is..
* An example of hostess 9 ref 8) always smiling for 8 hours, requiring too much, this is physically and mentally draining. It is not right to put your heart and soul in to it.
* Linder smircich (ref 9) : culture is something you have – can be changed. Or something that just is which cannot be changed.
